E&P Basics

 Exploration & production (e&p) are two distinct activities that collectively refer to the development of natural resources.  Natural resources broadly fall under two categories, energy and mining.  Energy resources are hydrocarbons (coal, natural gas, crude oil) and minerals are generally things listed on the periodic table like metals such as gold and iron.

Discovering resources is the realm of geologists and geophysicists.  Geophysicists are the measurement folks, they design and use instrumentation to gather geophysical information like seismic data.  Geologists collaborate with geophysicists and incorporate their geophysical data to build a better understanding of the subsurface geology.  They often analyze cores which are rock samples drilled from a study area and well logs  field...
